JAN 15, 2025 (IMP): The peace talks between the Government of India (GoI) and the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) are advancing, and the first meeting of the ‘Peace Monitoring Committee’ (PMC) for the year 2026 was reportedly held in Imphal on January 13.

The said high-level meeting was attended by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) Northeast Advisor A.K. Mishra, Joint Director of the Intelligence Bureau Rajesh Kamble, Security Advisor Kuldeep, and the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) of Manipur, along with senior officials from the Assam Rifles, CRPF, and BSF. Four members from the UNLF’s Central Committee represented the outfit at the said ‘Peace Monitoring Committee’ meeting.

The Peace Monitoring Committee (PMC) was constituted as part of the peace agreement that was signed on November 29, 2023, in New Delhi between the GoI and UNLF to oversee the implementation of the ground rules and to address issues arising during the peace process. However, no official details were made available regarding the points deliberated in the meeting.

The current peace talks were hailed as a “historic achievement”, and according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the agreement would “usher in a new era of peace in the Northeast in general and Manipur in particular” (Press Information Bureau, November 29, 2023).
