June 11, 2026 : In a landmark initiative aimed at preserving and promoting Manipur’s rich cultural heritage, Tamphasana Girls Higher Secondary School has become the first government school in the state to introduce Manipuri Jagoi as an optional subject in its academic curriculum.
The formal launch of the subject was held at the school campus in the presence of Principal Dr. Vinita Elangbam, Manipuri Jagoi instructor Chongtham Ayangleima, Advisor of KIMACS Irom Ibomcha, KIMACS President Ningthoujam Ajitkumar, members of the organisation, teachers, and students.
The initiative was taken up following a proposal by KIMACS to introduce traditional art forms such as Manipuri Jagoi and Thang-Ta in educational institutions. Responding positively to the proposal, the school authority and the Principal approved the introduction of Manipuri Jagoi as an optional subject, making Tamphasana Girls Higher Secondary School the first government school in Manipur to implement such a programme.
Speaking on the occasion, the organisers highlighted the importance of preserving Manipur’s cultural identity through formal education. While Manipuri dance, Thang-Ta, and traditional music have earned global recognition, there has been growing concern over the lack of structured institutional efforts to pass on these cultural traditions to younger generations.
KIMACS has been actively conducting awareness programmes and training initiatives across the state to promote indigenous art forms and ensure that the state’s cultural heritage is preserved and transmitted to future generations. The introduction of Manipuri Jagoi in the school curriculum is being seen as a significant step towards achieving this objective.
The organisation further appealed to other educational institutions across Manipur to consider introducing Manipuri Jagoi and Thang-Ta as subjects so that students can gain a deeper understanding of the state’s culture, traditions, and identity while contributing to their preservation and growth.
