Thadou Students Demand Judicial Probe into Phubala Shooting, Condemn Killing of Civilian Woman in CCpur

The Thadou Students’ Association (TSA) has come out strongly against the recent twin tragedies in Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts, condemning the shooting of a farmer and the alleged point-blank killing of a civilian woman during a security operation.

The student body is calling for a time-bound judicial probe and accountability from security forces under President’s Rule.

In a statement, the Thadou Students’ Association (TSA) condemned the June 18 incident at Phubala, Bishnupur district, where a local farmer, Ningthoujam Biren Singh, was shot and injured while working in his paddy field.

The incident took a deadlier turn with the killing of Hoikholhing Haokip, the wife of a village chief from Langchingmanbi in Churachandpur district, allegedly during a retaliatory action by security forces.

TSA expressed grave concern over what it described as a “possible fake encounter” and a gross violation of human rights, urging the Manipur Government and Centre to institute an impartial judicial inquiry or hand over the investigation to a central agency like the CBI or NIA.

The association also decried the increasing militarization of civilian areas despite President’s Rule being in force since February 2025.

The association further demanded suspension of the security personnel involved pending investigation; immediate protection measures for civilians in conflict-prone zones; and adequate compensation and medical support for the victims and their families.

Appealing for communal harmony, TSA urged all communities to remain calm and warned against the spread of unverified information that could escalate tensions.

The student body reaffirmed its commitment to peace, justice, and the protection of human rights in Manipur.
