Thangjam Rohit (jersey no. 10) of the Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF) was declared the Best Player as MSF lifted the title of the 8th Manipur Players’ Day Invitational Football Championship 2026, defeating their opponents 2–1 in a closely contested final at the Manipur University Football Ground, Canchipur.
Kwairakpam Suresh Singh (jersey no. 1) of MSF was adjudged the Best Goalkeeper, while Kapil (jersey no. 15) emerged as the Top Scorer of the tournament.
The championship was organised as part of the observance of “Manipur Players’ Day” (Sanaroishinggi Numit) by the Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF) and the Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) 2025–26 on Wednesday.
The day commemorates Manipur’s historic triumph in the 5th National Games held in 1999, where the state secured 49 gold, 24 silver, and 39 bronze medals. The observance was first initiated in 1999 by former Chief Minister Wahengbam Nipamacha.
The tournament commenced on February 20 and concluded on February 25 (Wednesday) at the Manipur University Football Ground.
Apart from the final match, exhibition football matches were also played. Mami Thawan defeated Maheiroi Lup-6 by 4–2 goals. In another exhibition match, Maheiroi Lup-6 edged past MUSU (2025–26) via a penalty shootout after both teams were locked 1–1 at full time.
The event was attended by several dignitaries and student leaders as presidium members, including Prof. Ch. Ibohal Singh, Dean of Students’ Welfare, Manipur University; Dr. Kshetrimayum Narayan Singh, President of MUTA; L. Anita Chanu, weightlifting coach and Dhyanchand Awardee; Hijam Roshan, President of MSF; Oinam Romesh, President of DESAM; Seram Hemjit Meitei, President of KSA; Ningthoujam Dhanakumar Meitei, President of SUK; Longjam Thonglen, President of AIMS; and Mayanglambam Malemnganba Singh, General Secretary of MUSU (2025–26).
The MSF appreciated civil society organisations, student bodies, students, and youths for their continued support in making the championship a success.
