Those Benefiting from Conflict Don’t Want Peace: CM Khemchand Recalls Meals with Kuki, Paite, Hmar and Meitei Communities

June 17, 2026 : Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh today alleged that certain individuals do not want peace to return to Manipur as they stand to benefit monetarily from the ongoing unrest.

Speaking at the 8th Foundation Day celebration of the Chingamakha Nambul Mapal Development Committee held in Imphal, the Chief Minister recalled several peace initiatives undertaken by him after assuming office and expressed concern that violent incidents repeatedly followed efforts aimed at fostering harmony among different communities.

Khemchand recounted his visit to Jiribam by road, where he shared meals and interacted with members of various communities, including Kuki, Paite, Hmar, and Meitei residents, as part of confidence-building measures.

However, he said that the very next day, the unfortunate Tronglaobi incident occurred, disrupting the atmosphere of peace.

The Chief Minister also referred to efforts made to address tensions in the Ukhrul region. He stated that after security forces were deployed along the Mahadev-Litan road and the issue in the area was largely settled, another unfortunate ambush incident took place.

“Some people do not want to bring peace to Manipur,” Khemchand remarked, suggesting that vested interests continue to undermine reconciliation efforts and social harmony in the state.
