Thousands Join the 60th Hunger Marchers’ Day Observance

With an early morning invocation ritual, thousands of people joined in paying rich tribute at the Students’ Martyrdom Complex located at Pisum Chingamacha in Imphal, commemorating the 60th Hunger Marchers’ Day on Wednesday, organised by the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU).

After paying tribute, Imphal witnessed a mammoth rally with public participation, which took off from Pisum Chingamacha in Imphal. On this day, the 27th of August, 1965, Manipur was thrown into the throes of an artificial scarcity of rice, and four student leaders lost their lives in a mass protest march against the artificial famine.

The four student leaders were Waikhom Nilamani, Oinam Nabakumar, Nongmeikapam Pramodini, and Laishram Chaobhal. Since then, the day has been observed every year by AMSU, for which the seed for the formation of the oldest student body in Manipur was also sown.
