Protests against the WAQF Bill Amendment continue, as thousands of men, women, and children participated in Imphal East on Tuesday. People from three major Muslim pockets—Kairang Muslims, Khabeisoi, and Khurai Khumidok—belonging to two Assembly Constituencies (Khurai and Heingang AC) participated in the protest held at Khumidok Bazar-Heikrumakhong area.
Protesters formed human chains, shouted slogans against the bill, and also held a rally march. Protester Tayebur Rahman said personalised attacks against BJP Minority Morcha President Asker Ali are condemnable. Tayebur Rahman, however, said community members are angry with the passing of the bill and democratic forms of protest will continue until and unless the bill is repealed.
Other than Imphal East, continuous protests against the bill are being reported from different Muslim pockets in Thoubal and Bishnupur among others.
Mention may be made that an angry mob burnt down the house of BJP Minority Morcha President Mohammad Asker Ali situated at Lilong in Thoubal district on the 6th of this month. And the authority had to clamp down curfew in Lilong areas. Asker Ali later publicly apologised for hurting the sentiment of the community.
