A three-day training program on cane and bamboo products, organized under the RAMP (Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance) Scheme, concluded on Friday at the Lambung Community Hall in Chandel district. The program, which began on Wednesday, aimed to promote local craftsmanship, sustainable livelihoods, and forest conservation.
The concluding event was attended by Dr. N. Munal Meitei, DFO/Chandel, Shri David Boyes, Former President of Chandel Naga Peoples Organisation, LH Noah, Lambung Village Chief, and DL Indu Maring, Master Trainer, who served as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Munal Meitei emphasized that cane and bamboo products not only reflect Manipur’s rich cultural heritage but also play an important role in economic development. “These products have the potential to attract tourists and uphold our traditions and culture,” he said.
Dr. Munal further highlighted the environmental benefits of promoting cane and bamboo. Referring to the Global Forest Watch 2024 report, he noted that Manipur had lost 178 sq km of forest cover. He stressed the need to plant “Green Gold” bamboo in areas affected by jhum cultivation and poppy farming to ensure a sustainable supply of raw materials while enhancing the state’s green cover.
Appealing to participants, Dr. Munal urged them to utilize cane and bamboo for both economic betterment and forest conservation.
Speaking at the event, Shri David Boyes underscored the eco-friendly nature of cane and bamboo products and their growing significance. He noted that a region rich in cane and bamboo resources can be considered prosperous, emphasizing the economic potential of these traditional materials.
The training program provided participants with practical knowledge and skills to create marketable cane and bamboo products, contributing to both livelihood opportunities and the preservation of Manipur’s cultural and environmental heritage.
