Three Residential Schools to be Ready by Dec; More Industrial Estates Coming Up in Hill Districts

The state government’s efforts and various projects for development, especially in the hill areas, are in full swing across different key sectors. As many as three Eklavya Residential Model Schools (EMRS) will be ready for inauguration by December 2025, while the Industrial Estates of Ukhrul and Chandel are now ready for commissioning. New proposals for more industrial estates have been submitted to the Ministry to push for micro-industries and create new employment opportunities.

The EMRS Riha, EMRS Chandel, and EMRS Churachandpur near Loktak are progressing at a great pace, and the Department of TA & Hills has been consistently monitoring the work progress implemented by MTDC—Manipur Tribal Development Corporation—and MANIDCO—Manipur Industrial Development Corporation Limited. Tribal students, both boys and girls, admitted to these schools will avail themselves of state-of-the-art infrastructure, with an investment of Rs. 1.44 lakhs per student per year, translating to Rs. 12,000 per month.

Proposals for another 5–6 new EMRS in different hill districts, including Kangpokpi, have been submitted for sanction to the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India. During his visit to New Delhi, Additional Chief Secretary (TA & Hills) of Manipur, Anurag Bajpai, IFS, discussed avenues for the establishment of higher education institutes in the hill districts of Manipur with Vineet Joshi, IAS, Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Government of India. This development was also highlighted by ACS Anurag Bajpai during his meeting with Ex-ADC members in Manipur.

New project proposals for establishing Industrial Estates at Chandel, Kamjong, and other districts have been initiated, and land availability and acquisition processes are underway through the respective Deputy Commissioners, with funding support from the Ministry of MSME, Government of India. Already, the Industrial Estates of Ukhrul and Chandel are ready for inauguration, and three new proposals have been submitted to the Ministry.

Additionally, carbon trading facilities and projects with investments from major industries have been initiated. Work is progressing toward signing final agreements with global partners and associates. Already, five village authorities and councils have signed agreements for raising plantations under good forest cover, implemented as a pilot project for Manipur under the Forest Department.
