Pertaining to the images posted on a social media page (suspected to be a fake page) of hoisting the Salai Taret flag (Meitei seven-colored flag) at Shirui Peak by individuals claiming to be members of ‘Arambai Tenggol’ (AT – Unit 58 Cobra) during the ongoing Shirui Lily Festival, the Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) has issued a strong condemnation of what it calls a “grave provocation” and denounces the act as a calculated attempt to politicize a peaceful cultural celebration, stating that such symbolic aggression directly challenges the dignity, identity, and territorial integrity of the Tangkhul Naga people.
“This is not just an insult; it is a deliberate attempt to provoke, disrupt peace, and assert ideological dominance beyond the Imphal Valley,” TKS stated in a press statement. The body (TKS) also made it clear that they will not tolerate the imposition of foreign flags, slogans, or narratives on Tangkhul land.
However, the situation took a turn after many local social media influencers revealed that the viral social media post claiming responsibility for the act was a fabrication.
In a clarification issued, AT said the Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) has been misled by inaccurate and misleading information circulated by a Facebook page handler under the name “Manipur Stylish”. In sensitive matters such as this, we believe it is imperative to verify the authenticity of sources before arriving at hasty conclusions. Misinterpretation of such events only fuels division, and it is evident that certain elements are working with the intent to disrupt peaceful coexistence between the Meitei and Naga communities.
Arambai Tenggol, Unit 58 COBRA, also said the AT firmly upholds the idea of a united Manipur and remains committed to preserving the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the state. The image in question, showing members holding the Salai Taret (Seven Clan) flag, is being unnecessarily politicized. The flag symbolizes the unity and peaceful coexistence of indigenous clans of Manipur and is a regular feature at expeditions, sporting events, and cultural occasions whether in India or abroad. Displaying this flag in Shirui Hills does not, and should not, be construed as a territorial claim or provocation.
The AT also said, moreover, in the video footage of the event, the slogans clearly heard – “Ema Leibak Na Yaifare, Long Live Manipur, Shirui Ema Na Yaifare” – are messages of love and reverence for the land and people of Manipur. They do not contain any content that disrespects or threatens any community. We urge TKS and all concerned individuals to examine the context of the video with care and objectivity.
Mention may be made here that the post, made by a handle named Manipur Stylish, claimed, “We, Arambai Unit 58 (Cobra Team), proudly hoisted the Salai Taret flags atop Shirui Hills…”. However, many social media users believe that the page is allegedly operated by individuals using pseudonyms as a Meitei, with past activity showing alignment with pro-Kuki sentiments. Screenshots of older posts were shared online, revealing the handle’s deceptive identity and agenda to incite inter-community conflict during a sensitive event.
