July 14, 2026 : With the aim of keeping all areas under its jurisdiction clean and making them Plastic-Free Zones, the Thoubal Municipal Council (TMC) has started a new initiative. As part of this, Self Help Groups under the Council have begun collecting plastic waste.
Today, members of the Panthoibi Self Help Group of Ward No. 1, Thoubal Wangmataba, collected plastic waste from garbage that was dumped by the public during door-to-door collection in their locality. They segregated the plastic and kept it separately.
About 105 kg of plastic waste was collected today by TMC.
Ojit, Revenue Officer of the Thoubal Municipal Council, said, “The waste plastic being collected now will be sold to other agencies by TMC and converted into money.”
He also appreciated the Panthoibi Self Help Group for sincerely carrying out this work, adding that if waste plastic is properly collected and disposed of, it can be sold and will also help in keeping the area clean.
The areas under the Thoubal Municipal Council have a population of around 60,000. However, TMC has fewer than 1,000 sanitary workers.
It is very difficult for fewer than 1,000 sanitary workers to clean up all the waste generated by 60,000 people.
Therefore, he appealed to the public to help TMC in keeping Thoubal clean by not littering and by disposing of waste properly, even if they cannot help with cleaning.
He also urged SHGs to work with dedication to make Thoubal a Plastic-Free Zone.
