THOUBAL, JUNE 04, 2026 (DIO): A one-day farmers’ training programme on Scientific Cultivation of Makhana for Enhancing the Livelihood of Farmers under the CSS for Development of Makhana in Manipur was held today at Tentha Thonkhong Bamon Mandop, Thoubal.
The programme was organised by the District Horticulture and Soil Conservation Department, Thoubal.
Chief Guest of the function, Assistant Commissioner, Thoubal, Tenshubam Sangeeta, said Makhana is a very popular food item in Manipur. According to food scientists, after various research studies and investigations, it is now considered a superfood with various nutritional values. She said that under the Makhana Development Scheme, the State Government selected two farmers from each district for training at Agriculture University, Sabour, Bihar.
She further said that the climatic conditions of Manipur are very favourable for Makhana cultivation. She appealed to farmers to take advantage of the various schemes provided by the Government. Farmers, in consultation with the Agriculture Department and other departments like Horticulture and Soil Conservation, should be aware of the available schemes. They can benefit from the schemes provided by the Government for the development of farmers, promote self-employment among youth in the state, and help generate income.
District Agriculture Officer R.K. Umakanta Singh said that various schemes are available under the Agriculture Department and that farmers must work sincerely to derive maximum benefits from them. He said that training programmes are conducted from time to time to help farmers gain updated knowledge of scientific farming.
Speaking at the function, District Horticulture and Soil Conservation Officer Kh. Malemnganba said that the department is providing training to farmers to equip them with modern scientific knowledge of farming. He appealed to farmers to take advantage of the free seed distribution programmes conducted by the departments from time to time.
Around eighty (80) farmers participated in the training programme.
