Transform Loktak into World-Class Destination, Says Minister During Bishnupur Visit

Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas and Tourism, Suresh Gopi, during his official visit to Bishnupur district today, urged authorities to focus on transforming Loktak Lake into a world-class tourist destination, noting its immense potential to boost the state’s economy.

Chairing a district-level review meeting at the Mini Secretariat Complex, the Minister assessed the performance of various departments including Health, Education, Agriculture, Minor Irrigation, and Power. The session was attended by Deputy Commissioner Pooja Elangbam, SP Bishnupur, ADM, SDOs, BDOs, and other key district officials.

During a presentation on tourism, major attractions like Loktak Lake, Sangai Ethnic Park, INA Memorial Complex, and the Karang Digital Island initiative were showcased. Gopi lauded the initiatives and emphasized integrated development to maximize tourism-led growth.

In the health sector, he called for intensified efforts in combating infant mortality, sickle cell anaemia, and malaria. In education, he stressed the need for capacity-building training for teachers to enhance school quality and enrollment. The Minister also discussed the honorarium structure of cook-cum-helpers under school schemes.

On agriculture, he recommended expanding millet cultivation in alignment with national nutrition goals. Reviewing sanitation progress under the ODF initiative, he reiterated the importance of health, food, and education as the backbone of progress.

Later in the day, he inspected District Hospital Bishnupur, interacting with patients and staff. He also visited the Indian Peace Memorial at Maibam Lokpa Ching and the Imphal Peace Museum to pay homage to fallen soldiers.
