Tribals Council Flags Illegal Migration, Deforestation and Poppy Cultivation in Appeal to PM Modi

The Joint Tribes Council (JTC) of Manipur, representing the Inpui, Liangmai, Rongmei and Zeme communities, has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking urgent intervention over unchecked illegal migration and its growing impact on indigenous populations.

In a memorandum submitted through the Governor of Manipur, the JTC stated that continuous inflow of migrants from Myanmar and neighbouring Indian states has altered demographic patterns, strained local resources and posed threats to cultural identity and traditional livelihoods.

The council alleged that new settlements have rapidly expanded along major highways and are linked to widespread deforestation and illicit poppy cultivation.

It further claimed that armed groups protect these settlements, impose illegal taxation on National Highway traffic and restrict movement of certain communities, creating fear and insecurity among indigenous residents.

The JTC also cited census data to argue that the abnormal rise in Kuki population over the decades indicates migration-driven demographic changes.

Highlighting historical records of violent clashes in the past, the council said many indigenous communities fear becoming strangers in their own land.

It urged the Centre to identify and deport illegal migrants, dismantle unlawful settlements and remove armed groups to restore peace and stability.

A copy of the appeal was also sent to Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
