Tribunal Reserves its Judgment, Fate of 5 JD(U) MLAs Hangs in Balance

Feb. 7, 2025: The disqualification case involving five Janata Dal (United) MLAs reached its climax at the Manipur Legislative Assembly’s tribunal today.

Lasting three intense hours, the hearing saw fiery arguments from both sides over allegations of defection to the BJP. Lead counsel M. Bhupendra pressed for disqualification under constitutional provisions, citing violations of the Tenth Schedule.

Amid mounting tension, the Speaker reserved judgment, leaving the political fate of Kh. Joykishan, Ngursanglur Sanate, Md. Achab Uddin, Thangjam Arunkumar, and L.M. Khaute hanging by a thread.

This crucial decision comes just days before the Manipur Assembly session kicks off on February 10, adding to the political tension.

As the state braces for a high-stakes legislative session, all eyes are on the Speaker’s tribunal for the verdict that could reshape the Assembly dynamics.
