Two Kuki Villages Razed on Indo-Myanmar Border: Curfew Imposed as Tensions Escalate in Sahamphung

As many as two Kuki villages, namely Gampal and its hamlet Haiyang under Sahamphung Sub-Division in Kamjong District, were reduced to ashes this morning after being allegedly set ablaze by unidentified assailants.

The attack, which occurred around 9 AM, has triggered widespread alarm and prompted the district administration to clamp down with immediate curfew orders.

Initial reports suggest the involvement of armed individuals, although authorities have cautioned the public against drawing premature conclusions.

Eyewitness accounts from nearby communities, including Hengyang and Kangpal, indicate that a group of unidentified persons stormed the area before the fires broke out.

No casualties have been officially reported so far, but the destruction of homes and property has left dozens displaced and without shelter.

District officials and law enforcement personnel rushed to the spot to assess the scale of destruction and provide emergency assistance. The atmosphere remains tense as residents attempt to come to terms with the attack and potential security risks in the region.

In response to the volatile situation, Kamjong District Magistrate Rangnamei Rang Peter issued a prohibitory order restricting the movement of residents and prohibiting gatherings or activities that may disturb the prevailing law and order. The curfew, effective from 2 PM today, will remain in force until further notice.

“The situation poses a significant risk of escalating into a larger law and order issue,” stated the official notification. “In the interest of public peace and safety, strict restrictions have been enforced.”

The full extent of the damage is yet to be ascertained, and investigations are ongoing. No arrests have been made as of the time of reporting.
