A total of 54 private universities across the country, including three from Manipur, have been declared defaulters by the University Grants Commission for failing to comply with UGC rules, including the failure to submit the required information under Section 13 of the UGC Act, 1956, and not making public disclosures on their websites.
The three private universities from Manipur that have been declared defaulters are Asian International University, Bir Tikendrajit University, and Manipur International University, all located in Imphal West district.
The private universities were earlier asked to submit information for inspection purposes, and the data had to be submitted in the prescribed soft copy format, along with documents verified by the university registrar. They were also asked to upload these completed formats on their official websites.
Other universities from the Northeast that defaulted on UGC instructions include five from the state of Sikkim and one each from Assam and Tripura. The private institutes in Sikkim are Medhavi Skills University, East Sikkim; Sikkim Alpine University (formerly EIILM University), South Sikkim; Sikkim Global Technical University, Namchi; Sikkim International University, West Sikkim; and Sikkim Skill University, South Sikkim. The private institutes in Assam and Tripura are Krishnaguru Adhyatmik Visvavidyalaya, Barpeta, and Techno India University, West Tripura, respectively.
From the total of 54 private institutions across the country, Madhya Pradesh had the maximum number, with 10 private universities declared defaulters.
