The United Naga Council (UNC) has declared that it will impose a trade embargo across Naga-inhabited areas in Manipur starting from midnight of September 8, 2025.
The decision was taken during its Presidential Council meeting held on August 11. A trade embargo refers to a halt in the movement and supply of goods, including essentials.
According to the UNC, the move comes in protest against the Government of India’s unilateral abrogation of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) with Myanmar and the ongoing construction of border fencing through what it terms as the Naga homeland.
The council stated that despite repeated memoranda, public rallies, and demonstrations since January 2024, the government has remained indifferent to Naga concerns, compelling them to adopt a more stringent form of agitation.
The UNC has appealed for full cooperation from the Naga people both within and beyond Manipur, while also seeking the understanding of the wider public. It said the agitation is aimed at defending the Naga identity, culture, and traditional ties that, according to them, are threatened by the scrapping of FMR and fencing activities.
