The Ward No. 6 United Club, Uripok has strongly condemned the alleged physical assault on Dr. Yambem Priyanka, a dentist at Khusboo Dental Clinic located near the Palace Compound, reportedly perpetrated by Manipur Police personnel on Wednesday amid crowd-control operations connected to the Sangai Festival.
Speaking at a press meet held at Uripok Huidrom Leikai Community Hall, the club’s general secretary, Ningthoukhongjam Thanil, said that the clinic, situated close to Hapta Kangjeibung, experienced tear gas firing while police tried to disperse individuals opposing the Sangai Festival, claiming that those present at the location were IDPs.
According to Thanil, Dr. Priyanka was on duty when the tear gas shells were suddenly lobbed, leading her to step outside the clinic for safety. It was at this moment that she was allegedly manhandled and beaten by security personnel, he said, adding that the doctor is currently undergoing medical treatment due to injuries sustained.
The United Club demanded that the state government and concerned authorities initiate an immediate inquiry and take appropriate action against the police personnel involved. The club also stated that such actions against medical professionals on duty are unacceptable and urged the government to ensure accountability.
