UNLF Peace Accord with Govt Still Intact; Over 1400 Cadres in 6 Designated Camps

March 16, 2026 (IMP): The ‘Peace Accord’ signed between the Government of India and the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) still remains in force, and the authorities have verified a total of 1,435 cadres of the outfit, the Home Minister of Manipur, Konthoujam Govindas, informed the House on Monday (16 March) during the ongoing State Assembly.

Responding to a query raised by opposition Congress MLA Okram Suraj Kumar on the status of the ‘peace talk’, the State Home Minister also informed the House that the accord, signed in November 2023, continues to remain intact till today. The verified cadres of the outfit are currently stationed at their respective six (6) ‘Designated Camps’, and basic amenities are being provided by the government for the camps.

The Home Minister also informed the House that the Centre has sanctioned Rs 5.83 crore for the upkeep of the camps. The amount is being released in five instalments covering the period from December 2023 to April 2024, and the State Government is still awaiting the release of funds for the subsequent six months, from May 2024 to October 2024, to clear the remaining backlog.

It may be mentioned here that on November 29, 2023, the Government of India and the Government of Manipur signed a historic peace agreement with the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), the oldest valley-based armed group in Manipur. The accord aims to resolve the long-standing conflict in Manipur through a political dialogue process, as stated by Moirangthem Nongyai, the then Acting Chairman of UNLF, on December 1, 2023, at Kangla.
