In a significant breakthrough against extortion activities, Manipur Police on Wednesday arrested three active members of the proscribed United People’s Party of Kangleipak (UPPK), including the group’s Chairman, during an intelligence-led operation in the Ghari Makha Leikai area under Lamphel Police Station in Imphal West district.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Konthoujam Homeshwor Singh alias Chingkhei (65), Chairman of UPPK, from Khurai Thangjam Leikai, Imphal East; Kayenpaibam Shinghajit Singh (56) of Konthoujam Kangjeibung Mapal, presently residing at Ghari Makha Leikai, Imphal West; and Leitanthem Dhananjoy Meitei alias DJ alias Punshiba (45) of Thambalkhong Ayangpalli, currently staying in Khurai Ahongei Leikai, Imphal East.
Security personnel recovered a cache of arms and suspected forged documents during the operation. The seized items include two .45 mm pistols with two magazines containing 17 live rounds, one M-20 pistol with a magazine and five live rounds, three suspected forged gun licenses, four mobile phones with SIM cards, a two-wheeler, and one side bag.
The arrests mark a major step in disrupting illegal activities by non-state actors in the region. Authorities are continuing operations to root out extortion networks and ensure public safety.
