With the deployment of security forces in key vulnerable areas of Manipur, valley-based farmers residing in the fringe areas are now able to return to their respective agricultural fields located near Kuki-inhabited areas.
The security measures follow the June 19 incident in which a farmer sustained a bullet injury in Phubala in the Bishnupur district of Manipur. The incident prompted the implementation of enhanced security protocols after concerns were raised by the public and civil society organizations.
During visits to Kamong Maning and Koutruk in Imphal West—two of several areas under security coverage—it was observed that personnel are stationed from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily to protect farmers from potential threats originating from the nearby hills. Regular joint combing operations are being carried out, including in remote hill areas, to flush out miscreants. The administration has also formed flying squads and quick response teams for immediate action when needed.
Farmers in these regions have expressed relief, welcoming the government’s initiative. “This is a very good step. With security forces present, we are no longer afraid and can work in the fields peacefully,” said a farmer from Kamong Maning.
