MU VC Underscores Importance of Regional Languages in Higher Education

January 21, 2025: Aiming to support authors in developing textbooks in regional languages for higher education, a two-day workshop commenced today at the Manipur University campus in Imphal. The event was organised by the Manipuri Bharatiya Bhasa Samiti (MBSS) in collaboration with the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Inaugurating the workshop, titled “Academic Writing to Develop Textbooks for Higher Education in Bharatiya Language – Manipuri,” Manipur University Vice-Chancellor Prof. N. Lokendra emphasised the importance of languages and their inseparable connection to culture. He noted that culture remains incomplete without language.

Prof. Lokendra also highlighted the provisions of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which empowers educational institutions to promote the use of local languages in both schools and higher education. He stressed the need for adequate support to overcome challenges during the integration of regional languages into academic curricula.

The inauguration was attended by UGC Deputy Secretary Dr. Mriganka Sekhar Sarma, former Vice-Chancellor of Dhanamanjuri University Prof. N. Rajmuhon Singh, and Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University of Culture Prof. P. Gunindro Singh, among others.
