Voices of the IDP Find Expression at Manipur Art Festival

Against a backdrop of vibrant installations and rhythmic performances, the Manipur Art Festival opened today with a reminder of art’s ability to transcend struggle, as six Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) artistes took center stage, infusing the event with emotional depth and authenticity.

Held at the Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS) Complex in Konung Mamang, the two-day festival began with a rich celebration of colour, sound, and creativity, offering a platform to diverse artistic voices from across the state.

The participation of the IDP artistes, many of whom have been uprooted by the ongoing ethnic unrest in Manipur, added a deeply human element to the cultural showcase. Their performances, described by attendees as both “moving” and “inspiring,” were widely applauded and seen as a symbol of resilience and hope.

The festival was formally inaugurated by eminent senior artists Ch. Premananda Roy, Ksh. Sarat Singh, and Chandam Lalit Singh, who lit the ceremonial lamp and shared their reflections on the importance of art in healing and community building.

Organised by R&V Art House and led by Director and Co-founder Robin Wahengbam, the festival is themed “Art for All.” Robin stated that the core intention of the event is to create an inclusive space where artists from all walks of life, including those affected by displacement, can express themselves freely and be seen, heard, and supported.

Now in its fourth edition, the Manipur Art Festival was first launched in 2018, with subsequent editions in 2019 and a virtual version held in 2023. This year’s event features 11 curated art stalls, showcasing everything from visual art and fashion installations to face painting, photography, and local crafts.

Beyond exhibitions, the festival offers a full programme of interactive workshops, live performances, children’s activities, and traditional culinary delights, creating a multisensory experience for visitors of all ages.
