Wangkhei AC MLA Arunkumar Thangjam Calls for Compassionate, Collective Approach to Help Drug-Affected Youths Rebuild Their Lives

BJP Wangkhei AC MLA Arunkumar Thangjam has called for a compassion-driven and collective approach to tackle Manipur’s drug menace, emphasizing that drug-affected youths deserve understanding and opportunities for rehabilitation rather than stigma and punishment.

Speaking to reporters after inaugurating the State-Level 45-Day Free Detoxification-cum-De-Addiction Camp under the theme “Stop Criminalization, Promote Healthy Treatment” at Thangjam Birachandra-Meipakpi Community Hall, Chingmeirong, on Tuesday, Arunkumar said, “We must look at drug abuse not just as a criminal issue but as a social and health concern. Many of our youths have fallen into addiction due to various circumstances, but most of them genuinely want to come back and lead normal lives.”

He further stated that society should stand together to support such youths through compassion and proper rehabilitation rather than alienating them. “Let us create a space where they can rebuild themselves, regain confidence, and contribute positively to society,” he added.

The camp, organized by U-Trust in collaboration with the Social Welfare Department, Government of Manipur, provides free detoxification and rehabilitation services to 193 individuals from marginalized and underprivileged backgrounds.

The initiative aims to shift the focus from punishment to treatment, fostering awareness on addiction recovery, community support, and social reintegration for those battling substance dependence.
