World Habitat Day and Wildlife Week Rally Promotes Environmental Awareness in Chandel

The Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Chandel, organized a rally and awareness programme at the Chandel Multi-Purpose Hall to mark World Habitat Day and the 71st Wildlife Week.

The rally, flagged off by ADC Md. Firoz Khan and DFO Dr. N. Munal Meitei, started from Little One School and concluded at the DC Complex, with participants holding placards promoting wildlife and forest conservation.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. N. Munal Meitei emphasized that our true home extends beyond walls — it includes the environment and habitats we live in. He highlighted this year’s theme, “Urban Crisis Response,” stressing the need for sustainable urban growth and protection of natural habitats.

Dr. Munal expressed concern over habitat destruction, noting that while Manipur retains 77.20% forest cover, nearly 23% is degraded due to deforestation, illegal logging, and poppy cultivation. He warned that continued forest loss could lead to the extinction of many native species.

He appealed to authorities and villagers to curb illegal hunting and safeguard forest biodiversity.

As part of the observance, a Quiz Competition was held among students. Koinoniya Training School won first place, followed by Oak Hill Christian School and Oriental Academy, Chandel, in second and third positions respectively.
