World Hepatitis Day 2025 Observed in Thoubal

World Hepatitis Day 2025 was marked on Wednesday at Leishangthem Keithel with a district-level observance organized by the District Health Society (DHS) Thoubal in collaboration with the National Viral Hepatitis Control Programme (NVHCP). The event carried the global theme, “Hepatitis: Let’s Break It Down.”

Deputy Commissioner of Thoubal and DHS Chairman, Hannah Kahmei, IAS, graced the programme as chief guest. The function was presided over by Dr. Y. Nokul, District Mission Director and Chief Medical Officer of Thoubal. Other dignitaries present included Dr. W. Ruhinikumar, Medical Superintendent of District Hospital Thoubal; L. Raghu, Chairperson of Leishangthem Gram Panchayat; and Dr. Md. Abdul Khalik, MO in-charge of PHC Leishangthem, who attended as guests of honour.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. R.K. Kamala, District Nodal Officer of NVHCP Thoubal, underlined the urgent need for awareness about hepatitis. She cautioned that neglecting the disease could result in serious, life-threatening complications, but emphasized that prevention, regular screening, and healthy living can significantly reduce risks. She urged the public to adopt proactive measures and stay informed about liver health.

As part of the day’s activities, free hepatitis screening tests were conducted for attendees.

In her address, Chief Guest DC Hannah Kahmei pointed out that with the constant emergence of new diseases, timely diagnosis and preventive care are more crucial than ever. She stressed that the younger generation has the chance to enjoy healthier and longer lives if they prioritize good habits and health practices. She further advocated for safe and organic food consumption, encouraging farmers to shift towards organic farming methods. Public awareness of the nutritional and health benefits of organic produce, she added, must be expanded across communities.

The Deputy Commissioner also extended appreciation to the officials, staff, and members of the public who supported and participated in the observance.
