THOUBAL, June 14 — Manipur Meeyamgi Eehou (MAMEE) organized a political convention for the youth of the state on Sunday at Thoubal Melaground, Thoubal.
The convention, held as the first step toward launching a youth-led regional political movement, had Senior Advocate and former Chairperson of the Manipur State Human Rights Commission, Khaidem Mani, as moderator.
Attending as resource persons were social activist Ashang Kasar, AMMOCOC President SM Jalal, Zeliangrong United Committee Manipur President Maibon Phaomei, retired District and Sessions Judge Aribam Noutuneshwori Devi, senior journalist Irengbam Arun, Ima gi Meira President Th. Sujata, and Thoubal Apunba Lup President Romeshwor Waikhya. They spoke on various issues concerning the role of youth in addressing the current challenges facing the state.
Speaking on the purpose of the convention, MAMEE Convenor Oinam Premdas Khuman said that youth in Manipuri society have been taking up major responsibilities alongside the public. He noted that it is widely accepted that youth have played a major role in various incidents that have occurred at different times. Youth-led movements are also emerging in many parts of the world. In this context, he said, the youth of the state have resolved to come together and establish “Manipur Meeyamgi Eehou (MAMEE)” as a regional political platform based on a unified agenda.
Khuman said MAMEE has 10 main objectives. The first is to preserve and protect Manipur’s cultural and political heritage. Other objectives include working toward a corruption-free society, building a self-reliant economy through a holistic development approach, creating employment for youth through innovation and skill development, bringing reforms in education and agriculture through modern technology, establishing a Legislative Council, upholding free speech and constructive criticism, and empowering women and others.
He appealed to the youth and the public across the state to support and recognize the initiative being taken by MAMEE.
The convention also adopted several resolutions. They were:
- That youth take up a major role in establishing a self-reliant government in Manipur, and that MAMEE will work continuously toward this goal.
- That MAMEE will work with the people to pursue a self-reliant economy, to build a state free of external dependence, and to achieve a “Greater Economy” for Manipur within the framework of the Indian Constitution.
- That MAMEE will work to establish a “Martyr Park” for those who have lost their lives and whose bodies have still not been found due to the crisis in Manipur since May 2023.
- That MAMEE, along with the youth and the people, will launch various campaigns to preserve Manipur’s civilization and culture, to build a self-reliant society, to stand with youth and others who have raised their voices, and to eradicate the chain of corruption that has brought shame to the state.
- That MAMEE will be developed into a youth-led political party.
